8 Non-Negotiables For Dads with Daughters

A couple months ago, my kids were playing upstairs when my two-year-old daughter Rebekah starts screaming at the top of her lungs. I ran upstairs to find that she’d cut her eyebrow from jumping off the bed onto her brother’s train table.
Since it looked bad, I called my neighbor for help so I could take Rebekah to the Urgent Care clinic. After waiting and being seen, the doctor explained that she’d need three stitches. The nurses and I held Rebekah down while the doctor threaded her skin. Her eyes filled with tears as she shouted, “D-a-d-d-y … D-a-d-d-y!”
My heart broke for her. One of the nurses holding Rebekah’s hand looked at me and said, “It’s amazing how kids know daddy is the protector. She wants him!” I nodded my head and knew what she meant.
It starts young when a little girl’s heart longs for Daddy. I was right there with Rebekah but she needed his strong hands, wisdom, encouragement and guidance in the midst of her suffering. And no one else could fill that protector role like him.
Thankfully her distress came to an end. She left the building with new stitches, stickers, a cute teddy bear, and still wondering where Daddy was. I assured her she’d see him soon.
Not only do girls need physical protection from their fathers but also emotional and spiritual safeguards throughout their life. But how does a father build a rich love and faith into his daughter’s life for the long haul? Here are 8 non-negotiables.
1. Meditate on God’s Word. Reading, studying, and meditating on God’s Word is your foundation. Putting your relationship with Christ a priority will model to your daughter that God is your ultimate authority and to whom you’re accountable.
“I meditate on your precepts, and consider your ways” (Ps. 119:15).
2. Honor your marriage vows. The greatest gift you can give your daughter is a deep love for your wife. Do whatever it takes to cultivate your marriage relationship. Your sacrificial love and commitment to your wife — even when it’s difficult — shows your daughter that your faith is real.
“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Eph. 5:25).
3. Prize purity. There’s no better way to treasure purity than to model it yourself. Be accountable to other godly men. Protect your eyes and your screens. Help your daughter understand why it’s God’s plan to save sexual intimacy for marriage.
“Set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity” (1 Tim. 4:10).
4. Share God’s truth. Teach your daughter the gospel and God’s life-giving commands and truths. Your teaching doesn’t always have to be a structured devotional time, but be diligent to use teachable moments as an opportunity to share who God is.
“Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads…” (Deut. 11:18).
5. Discipline consistently. True freedom = discipline + rules. Your daughter needs to know there are real consequences to her actions and decisions. Setting strong boundaries and standards early on will save her from future heartache.
“Discipline your children while there is hope. Otherwise you will ruin their lives” (Prov. 19:18).
6. Schedule daddy-daughter dates. Take her to her favorite restaurant or to your work for a lunch date. You can start this when she’s young. Teach her what is appropriate dress before she leaves the house. Show her how a man should treat a woman.
“Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres” (1 Cor. 13:6-7).
7. Ditch the distractions. Say “no” to activities and engagements that keep you away from family time. Be careful how much time you spend on electronics and sports channels. Show your daughter that your relationship to her takes precedence.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control…” (Gal. 5:22).
8. Ask forgiveness. Your daughter knows you’re human and make mistakes, but it’s good to admit when you fail. Seek forgiveness when you’ve screwed up. Humbling yourself in such a way will show her that you’re striving to follow God as best you can.
“Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective” (Jas 5:16).
No perfect dad exists, but there is a perfect God to help you. The time you spend investing in your daughter’s life today will reap dividends in the future. She needs your love and faith more than you’ll ever know.

Obedience Is A Gift!

A great article from Jay Younts at Shepherd Press

Over the time that your children are in your home you will give them many gifts. Some will be small. Some will be huge. Some will be foolish and unwise. Some will be well thought out.  Some will be unappreciated. Some will be cherished. This is the nature of gifts. The one sure way you can know if your gift is good is if your gift is one that is commanded by God.

Parents often don’t think of obedience as a gift. But teaching your children to obey is among the most precious gifts that you can possibly give. Paul puts it this way in Ephesians 6:1-3:

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise— “that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.”

Solomon says this in Proverbs 4:1-2:
Listen, my sons, to a father’s instruction;
pay attention and gain understanding.
I give you sound learning,
so do not forsake my teaching.

Teaching your children that biblical obedience is doing exactly what they are told, right away, with a good attitude is a gift that will serve them for the rest of their life.

Not too long ago I spoke with a mother whose daughter had just told of how she honored God in a trying situation as a young adult. The daughter spoke of how she recalled passages of scripture that her mom taught her as child.  She remembered them as she faced her trial. These passages brought peace to her and helped her to do what was right.  This response was something that her mom and dad had prayed for as they taught her to obey as a very young child. These parents had given their child the gift of obedience that can only come from submission to Christ.

There are times when you wonder whether the seemingly endless confrontations with teaching your child to obey quickly are really worth it – take heart, they are!

Handing Over Stress, Anger and Fear

We've all heard that trials come, and trials go. We can either worry and fret unendingly over them, or learn from them and of course breathe a huge sigh of relief when the light at the end of the tunnel finally seems to appear. However, sometimes there are circumstances and life events that come at us and it literally feels like an attack on our soul itself. Can you relate? I'm talking about the heart wrenching, tear streaming, at the end of our rope and can't take the hurt anymore moments.

These kind of "moments" are the ones which seem to last for weeks, months or even years.

After spending several days reading and studying Psalm 56. For me, Psalm 56 turned on that light bulb on how we should be handling such moments that will allow us to escape the sadness, fear, grief, and heartache... and accept help, deliverance and peace over it so we can stand up, move forward, and be thankful!

In this particular psalm, David calls out a prayer for help and deliverance. With a combination of evil doings of others, as well as his own fears and mistakes on his part, he finds himself in a mess that is consuming his heart and mind with grief. He walks himself through his problem in his prayer, and we can have breakthroughs of our own by following example.

David told God his problem. Nowhere in the psalm does it say he called up his friends, ran to his mom, ranted on Facebook, or discussed it at the office, like much of us too often do. He went to God crying... literally. He shared everything about what was bothering him. He explained his worries, fears, and what he was up against. He told God about how the people were running their mouth about him, twisting his words, and hoping he made mistakes that they could call him out on. He even told God not to let them get away with it and to cast them down. Of course God already knew and saw what he was going through, but David acknowledged God as his confidant by turning to Him, and Him alone.

When friends, family, co-workers or just life in general hands you those struggles, don't wait until YOU can't handle it any longer... kneel. Talk to Him. He sees what's going on, but who doesn't feel better after they vent a scenario that has rocked your world. Prayer is communication between us and the throne, so fill Him in with how it's troubling your heart. The words don't have to be perfect. They can be through tears, shouting, or just whispers.

Although David was still in the midst of his dilemma, he thanked God as though it was already solved and over with. He knew the battle was still raging against him, but he began speaking as though it was over. He claimed God's word and His promises. He thanked God for delivering him out of the situation. (Something I need to implement in my life more often than not).

Your problem, whatever it is, may be growing around you, building up like a concrete wall that seems to be unbreakable. Circumstances don't matter. He's the Creator of your adversaries, so surely you can trust in Him to handle them for you... because let's face it, His intervention will always be better than handling it on your own. So hold onto His promises to deliver you from it. Go about your day with a heart and mind full of joy. The enemy will come at you telling you it's getting worse, that it's not a fixable situation, and that you're just plain nuts for praising through the storm... but do it anyway. Don't feed into the words of discouragement that the enemy whispers in your ear. Let it go, and be done with it.
